IMPLEMENTATION OF IMPROVED WETLAND SYSTEMS (IWS) AS A "ZERO-DISCHARE-TECHNOLOGY" IN POLAND

This paper discusses results from the implementation of a “zero-discharge- technology”primarily for single households, as well as hotels and small residential urban and rural areas.  During a 15 year span, 5,600 Improved Wetland Systems (IWS) were built, and from this reason an imported part  of treatment wetlands in Europe are located in Poland. The first section of this paperdiscusses water and wastewater management and its development trends. Particular attention is paid to creating sustainable water management in rural areas due to increased necessity in these regions.

REMOVAL OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS USING IMPROVED WETLAND SYSTEM TO WASTEWATER REUSE AS AN EXAMPLE FOR LOCAL SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT

This paper discusses the efficiency of removal organic compounds using Improved Wetland System (IWS). IWS are use in Poland and enables reuse of treated effluent in landscape irrigation and toilet flushing. The first section of this paper discusses the advisability of removing organic compounds at the highest level. Additional, the first section discusses the increase in frequency of treated wastewater reuse. So far, reuse of treated wastewater in local wastewater treatment systems included treatment and reuse only graywater

POSSIBILITIES OF DEVELOPING MUNICIPAL SEWAGE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES USING CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS AND TREATMENT PONDS

Over the past dozen of years, Poland saw the construction of a number of waste treatment plants, variously estimated at about 10,000, in which the major role is played by plant life. Of these, almost 6,000 operative units are a combination of constructed wetlands and treatment ponds, often described as a solution peculiar to Poland. They are one of the most widespread, compact and repeatable sewage treatment systems based on natural methods. A decided majority of these facilities are small-scale treatment plants, but the above period also saw the construction of several high-capacity plants able to accept amounts of sewage ranging from 50 to 1,000 PE.

The second section focuses on agricultural development of Siberian land within Russia and the world and its hidden productive potential, which in the process of time will have greater economic importance. Evaluation of the current situation of agriculture in Siberia is presented as a result of the political and economic changes that have been a result of agriculture in Siberia, mainly in the 20th century.

QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF SELECTED SURFACE WATERS OF THE ARCTIC TUNDRA OF WESTERN SIBERIA IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

This chapter presents the results of research on selected terrestrial surface waters in the arctic tundra of Western Siberia conducted during spring of 2013, fall of 2014, and winter of 2015. The assessment of parameters studied demonstrates a strong influence of climate change on the water quality of Western Siberia.

ASSESSMENT OF BIOGENIC SUBSTANCES OF SELECTED TERRESTRIAL WATERS IN THE NORTHERN PART OF WESTERN SIBERIA: SIGNIFICANCE FOR ECOLOGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

This chapter presents the results of hydro-chemical research conducted in the spring of 2013 and end of August of 2014 in the northern part of Western Siberia. The research concerns waters of small streams, medium-sized rivers, the Ob’ River, and two large thermokarst lakes. The conducted research initiated a series of efforts that examine the ecology of Siberian waters. Each year the scope of research and the number of tested basins grows.

CHANGES IN ARABLE LAND USE IN SIBERIA IN THE 20TH CENTURY AND THEIR EFFECT ON SOIL DEGRADATION

The paper presents issues related to soil degradation in Siberia caused by wind and water erosion, as the effects of changes in the Siberian agriculture in the 20th century. In order to understand the mechanism of changes in land management and their effects, i.e. the rate of erosion in the previous century, the article presents the development of agriculture from prehistoric times to the end of the 20th century. The paper presents the consequences of soil degradation, i.e. loss of surface layers of soil, humic compounds and biogenic compounds, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
